Is dairy-free coffee healthy?

Creating a dairy-free coffee recipe solves two problems –

  1. It helps those who are dairy intolerant
  2. It is far far lower in carbs than a milky latte or cappuccino

How do you make a dairy-free coffee? For those who need to go dairy-free, opting for soy milk is out of the question (it’s still so controversial due to the possible dangers of phytoestrogens) plus it’s often packed with sugar. Nut milk isn’t true milk but very dilute nut juice with sugar, additives, thickeners and preservatives. Rice milk and oat milk are often high in carbs and ultra-processed.

How many carbs are there in coffee? Your morning cup of coffee livens you up but have you ever calculated how many carbs are in a milky coffee? See the carbs in coffee chart below.

How many carbs are there in milk? Full-fat milk has only 4g total carbs per 100ml, but the problem lies in the VOLUME of milk that is required to make a milky coffee such as a latte, cappuccino, or a flat white.

Once I discovered the carbs in a latte, I soon switched to a creamy coffee. Why? Because a creamy coffee only requires a cup of long black or filter coffee 0g + 1-2 tbsp cream = 1g  carbs

So coconut dairy-free coffee is the perfect solution.

Keto coffees

When switching to a dairy-free keto lifestyle, giving up your favourite coffee can be a challenge. Especially when you love a rich, creamy latte with some froth on top.

Instead of giving in to temptation, mix up a healthy coconut keto coffee. It is made with cinnamon, vanilla, and coconut cream to give you a rich and spicy flavour you will love sipping. The coconut cream is full of healthy fat that will help you stay full longer and want to snack less.

Ingredients

You will only need six ingredients to make this coffee:

  • water
  • instant coffee
  • coconut cream
  • vanilla extract
  • ground cinnamon – the cinnamon gives your coffee the perfect amount of spice, but you can easily switch it to a different spice if you want.
  • sweetener of choice.

Some other spices you make like in your coffee are nutmeg, ginger, or ground turmeric. Give them a try and see which ones are your favourite. You could also add a mixture of spices to keep your coffee interesting each morning.

How to make dairy-free keto coffee

The first step to making your coffee is to mix together a few tablespoons of boiling water and instant coffee mix. You can quickly boil the water by microwaving it for a minute, then mix in the instant coffee. This will give you a strong expresso-like shot of coffee.

Next, pour your coffee into a blender and add the remaining ingredients. Blend/blitz your coffee until it is emulsified and thoroughly mixed. An individual-sized blender is a perfect-sized blender for your coffee, but a regular blender works just as well too.

How to serve keto coffee

There are a few ways you can easily dress up and serve your coffee to match your mood. This is your treat, so if you have the time dress up your coffee and enjoy it.

The easiest way to serve your coffee is to simply pour it over a cup of ice and enjoy. If you want more of a Frappuccino-type coffee toss the ice into the blender and blend the coffee for about 20 seconds.

To make a hot coconut keto coffee to enjoy on a cold day simply heat up your coffee in the microwave for a minute or two, then sprinkle the top with your spice of choice.

  1. 5 stars
This is great, but I also love the variation that includes chocolate.
What if you substitute the cinnamon for 1 tablespoon of Dutch cacao and reduce the coffee by half?
Whizz and enjoy the same way – keep a long-handled spoon handy to get the last bits of foam out of the blender!

    Cheers!
