What is a pumpkin spice latte?
A keto pumpkin spice latte (or a pumpkin spice latte) is a creamy coffee blended with a pumpkin pie spice. There is no pumpkin in most pumpkin spice lattes. It's a favorite way to drink coffee in winter, autumn, and fall. And of course, it's also perfect at Thanksgiving.
So many readers are hooked on Starbucks pumpkin spiced latte (PSL for short), I decided to make a homemade keto version to save carbs and save money. So now you can enjoy your morning warm cup of coffee without ruining your macro goals, low-carb diet, or keto diet.
Ingredients, method & substitutions
This recipe is very easy to make. You just need 5 simple wholesome ingredients. All the quantities, recipe notes, and instructions are in the recipe card below.
Butter - this may be omitted if you want to lower the fat content. You can use coconut oil, but you would need to add additional flavors. Grass-fed butter is preferable.
Heavy whipping cream - this makes homemade keto coffee creamy and delicious. You can also use a dairy-free cream such as unsweetened almond milk, coconut cream, or coconut milk but it may not be as creamy as the original spice latte. Check the nutrition label for added sugars or starches.
Pumpkin pie spice mix - store-bought or homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe made from the individual spices pictured above.
Sweetener - use your favorite sugar replacement, and add more or less to adjust the sweetness of the keto coffee. The most common are erythritol, monk fruit, or stevia. Once you discover your favorite sugar-free sweetener, you will know how much you need to add. You may need more sweetener if you are a beginner.
Coffee - strongly brewed coffee (such as an espresso made in your espresso machine), a cold-brewed coffee, or a good quality instant coffee will also work in this recipe.
Variations: You can also add vanilla extract, a few drops of coffee extract, cold brew concentrate, or pumpkin puree (pumpkin pie filling) to add more flavor to your coffee. Please adjust the nutrition calculations and carb count if you make these changes.
How to make low-carb pumpkin pie spice
To save even more money, why not make your very own homemade pumpkin spice?
You can add the individual warm fall spices in exactly the quantities and spice ratios that you prefer. You can adjust the flavor and taste to exactly the way you love it.
Homemade pumpkin pie spice is perfect for a gift at this time of year for friends and family too, so make an extra batch or two.
How to make keto pumpkin spice latte
Begin with your favorite strongly brewed coffee such as an espresso shot. It needs to be strong so you can taste the coffee and the pumpkin pie spices.
Pour fresh coffee from your coffee machine, heavy cream, low carb pumpkin spice, keto-friendly sweetener into your blender, smoothie maker, or food processor.
Begin to blend and process until your creamy keto spice latte is frothy and everything is combined.
If you don't have a food processor, you can heat everything in a small saucepan on medium heat to mix and heat together. Then use a milk frother (or immersion blender) to emulsify all the ingredients.
Nutrition facts
A classic 20 fl oz venti Starbucks pumpkin spice latte contains 63g sugar. That's 15.8 teaspoons.
One serving of healthy homemade keto pumpkin spice latte provides 2 g net carbs, 1.3 g protein, 34.6 g fat, 318 calories.
How to make hot or cold
The keto pumpkin spice latte recipe card shows you how to make a hot spice latte.
How to make a cold coffee or an iced coffee, begin by using a chilled coffee or a cold brew (not a hot espresso coffee). Add all the ingredients to the blender and some ice cubes. Pour your frothy cold pumpkin coffee over a tall glass with ice. Serve with chilled whipped cream and you have your very own iced keto Starbucks at home.
How to serve
The perfect way to serve keto pumpkin spice latte is in a coffee mug with keto whipped cream and sprinkle ground nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice over the top to garnish.
If you have a good vanilla sugar-free syrup, you can pour that over the whipped cream too. Always check which sweeteners are in sugar-free syrups and avoid maltitol (it raises blood glucose and should always be avoided).
Keto coffee FAQs
There is no official keto coffee at Starbucks but my top tip to ordering a keto coffee at any coffee shop or cafe is to order any coffee that doesn't contain milk such as a long black. Order a small jug of cream and pour in as much as you like. Always ask for plain heavy cream (heavy whipping cream) and ask if there is any added sugar because many coffee shops will automatically give you sweetened whipped cream unless you ask for pouring cream.
A 20 fl oz venti pumpkin latte from Starbucks contains 63g sugar. That's 15.8 teaspoons of sugar, 470 calories and contains Milk, Pumpkin Spice Sauce [Sugar, Condensed Skim Milk, Pumpkin Puree, Contains 2 Or Less Of Fruit And Vegetable Juice For Color, Natural Flavors, Annatto, Salt, Potassium Sorbate], Brewed Espresso, Whipped Cream [Cream (Cream, Mono And Diglycerides, Carageenan), Vanilla Syrup (Sugar, Water, Natural Flavors, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid)], Pumpkin Spice Topping [Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg, Clove, Sulfiting Agents].
This recipe only contains 1g of sugar! That's a HUGE difference compared to the 63g in the coffee house version. Better yet, it's less than 2g net carbs.
A coffee shop pumpkin pie coffee can cost $3USD - $6USD. Homemade keto pumpkin coffee costs under $1 to make. That's a significant difference.
A strong espresso is the best, but you can use strong instant coffee too. Make sure the coffee has been freshly brewed or freshly made.
Yes, you can make it in advance but you would then need to mix the coffee one more time before serving. The spices often fall to the bottom of your coffee and you need to emulsify them again. If you want a hot coffee you will have to reheat it. In reality, this recipe is so quick and easy, I would suggest making the spice latte only when you need it.
Their original recipe never contained any pumpkin. It wasn't until 2015 did Starbucks actually begin to add pumpkin puree to its PSL coffees.
No, regular latte's are made with milk which has 4% carbs so the carb content quickly adds up. The best way to order coffee is to order a long black, tall black, or an Americano with a splash of cream. You can see all the carbs in coffee charts so you know exactly what to order when on a keto diet.
You always need to avoid high sugar baking, cakes, and cookies, but did you know you should also avoid their sugar-free syrups? Many cafes don't stock sugar-free versions or they automatically dispense the syrups with added sugars thinking you won't notice. So many readers have told me they test their blood glucose after a sugar-free syrup in a black coffee and it's sky-high.
I never advocate for drinking your meals and adding extra fat when you don't need to. However, many of you love your high-fat keto drink recipes and bulletproof coffees (high-fat coffees) so you can add MCT oil and extra butter if you prefer. However, excessively high-fat drinks can often be one of the main reasons you are not losing weight.
Yes, you can use unsweetened almond milk, unsweetened coconut milk, or enjoy a black spice latte.

Where do the carbs / sugar come from?
Libby www.ditchthecarbs.com
That will come from the milk/cream etc.
Terry
Just going to throw in an alternative here that’s equally scrumptious.
Recently I bought a Mini Creamer which is a small stick type blender that has a small wiping type end on it. All of $5 from a local $2 shop. Here’s what I do. Instead of butter I use 2 tbs of whole milk with 2 tbs cream (so half & half essentially) only adds 1.4g carbs. Put that mix in a small jug with sweetener and pumpkin spice. Microwave for 30s. Use the Mini Creamer to mix, aerate and foam milk top all at once for 20 to 30s max. It aerates beautifully. Pour over top of mug of single serve plunger, or espresso shots with water added. Then top the foamed milk with sprinkle of extra pumpkin spice if desired. Fantastic! The half and half mix will also work perfectly for regular low carb coffee (minus spice mix) too and perfect for anybody wanting authentic tasting latte at fraction of the carbs. Once you try it you won’t go back!

Ooooooooh how absolutely delicious. Thank you, Terry, for this superb idea (I am now running off to find a small stick blender).
Helen
Wow, my favorite morning drink now. Better than a dirty chai.
Thanks Helen.

They’re also called a ‘milk frother’ just to clarify that gadget - which might yield better web search results. A stick blender with a stainless wire that runs down to a circular whisk at the end. Best milk aeorator I’ve ever used, even over the one on my $1600 espresso coffee maker!!!

Thankyou Libby for this recipe just want to know if we need to uaed percolated coffee as opposed to instant
Libby www.ditchthecarbs.com
Which coffee you use is up to you and your preference. Personally, I like to use either instant coffee or my Nespresso machine depending on how I feel some days. I also alternate between caffeinated and decaf.
Carol
I assume this could be done with loads of flavours by replacing pumpkin pie spice with cinnamon, vanilla, etc.
