They’re a refreshing change and a quick and healthy, cheap snack.
Paleo Calamari Rings
So what is calamari anyhow? Calamari is squid, cut into slices then usually battered and fried.
There are two problems with this, the batter is high in carbs, gluten and grains but the worst element is the toxic oil they are fried in. My paleo calamari rings are simply rolled in almond flour/meal/crumbs with lemon zest and salt.
Gently fried in coconut oil or olive oil on a medium to low heat for a minute on each side and served with a squeeze of lemon juice all over. If you are not paleo, calamari rings are delightful gently fried in butter.

Paleo calamari rings are cheap! A squid tube cost me NZ 89c which is enough for 1 person as a snack or a side dish. if you want to make a full meal of grain free calamari, you probably need two and serve with a fresh salad, zoodles, or steamed veggies. Add plenty of extra virgin olive oil, pesto or homemade mayonnaise.
Where Should You Eat Fried Food?
Most restaurants or fast food joints use seed oils such as canola, soybean, sunflower or corn oil which are unstable, easily oxidised and high in pro inflammatory omega 6. An inflammatory diet high in processed oils, omega 6 and highly processed carbs increases our risk of so many modern diseases.
Fried food at restaurants and fast food chains is also fried at much higher temperatures than homemade fried food. What happens there, is another post altogether.
When we say we eat a high fat diet, that doesn’t mean you now have a licence to eat fried fatty foods, there is a difference. It means eating healthy fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and butter with each meal.
It means eating healthy fats until full, no more. It means stopping the industrial seed soils. It means stop eating fried food not made at home.
At home we can choose the oils we use, we fry food at a much lower temperature, and best of all, we don’t reuse the same oil again and again. Rancid oxidised oils are to be avoided forever.
Paleo Calamari Rings
Who misses calamari? Well now you have found paleo calamari rings, you can snack away to your hearts content and remain grain free and use only healthy oils.
Mix the almond flour/meal with the lemon zest and salt/pepper.
Slice the squid tubes into 1/2 inch / 1 cm slices.
Roll the calamari rings in the lemon almond mix.
Heat your oil of choice in a frying pan and fry on a gentle low heat for 1 minute each side until just cooked and the almonds have started to turn golden.
Drizzle with a squeeze of lemon juice and lemon wedges to serve.
